. legend has it that richard nixon heard that jfk was not going to get makeup from cbs for that debate, and so nixon said, well, i won't have any makeup either, then. even though he was running a 102 degree fever and not only was nixon ill that day, it turned out that when jfk turned down the cbs makeup offer, it was because he apparently had his own makeup arrangements already made. and so we got jfk with makeup and no fever, we got richard nixon with no makeup and a fever. what we got on tv in the first televised presidential debate in our nation's history was beauty and the beast. right? of course, jfk went on to win that election that year, whether or not it was because of the debate, i don't know, but thus was born the entire school of punditry that says it's all about the optics and watching things with the sounds off and all that existentially exhausting stuff we still say today. but here is the relevant context for understanding what happened last night. when mitt romney beat president obama in last night's televised debate. so the first televised presidential debate that we ha

't matter who you believe, suffolk university, fox news, quinnipiac, "new york times," cbs, all of them in virginia against likely voters have obama comfortably ahead. this is a big problem for mitt romney, isn't it? >> i don't think it's quite a big a problem as you have made it out to be. there was a poll suffolk university had out just tonight that had obama up by two. so it is true you've got obama up in swing states like virginia by small margins. but there's become this narrative that's really developed over the last week that the race is starting to get away from governor romney that i think is not really founded in necessarily good data. you know, out of five polls that will come out in the week, there's always one poll that will show some margin where it shows obama winning a state like virginia or ohio or florida by a margin that's greater than he won it in 2008. i think governor romney's a stronger candidate. i think the fundamentals are better for republicans. i have a very hard time believing some of these polls that are showing, you know, obama up by ten points in a place

as beard stick. he called frank stanton head of cbs news into the control room to see the stark disappearance of the candidates. he called ted rogers and said he was satisfied the way nixon looked. that's not the way the rest of the country saw it, when nixon started sweating through that beard stick. the next venue was nbc studios where we produce "hardball." wilson arrived with the kennedy brothers to figure out something was up. someone set the temperature to freezing. felt like a meat locker. jack said, what the hell is this? wilson remembers racing down to the basement looking for the air conditioning unit. there was a guy standing there that ted rogers put there for nixon and he said, don't let anybody change this pip said, get out of the way or i'm going to call the police. he immediately left and i changed the air conditioning back to normal. wilson understand the game and how it was going to be played. the candidates had their jobs to do, so did their handlers. he said his opponent, he said, he wanted to keep his job because of the screw-up that happened in the first de

to confirm the trend. a new quinnipiac "new york times" cbs poll shows surprisingly strong leads for the president. the galup tracking poll shows obama up six points. it's pretty hard to survey the polling data and not come to the conclusion that barack obama is beating mitt romney, that if the election were held today barack obama would win and that romney has a relatively steep though certainly not insurmountable uphill climb to victory. that is if you operate in the alternate epi stem mick universe of the media. >> that begs the question, are these polls dishonest? >> no. look, we endo you them with a falls scientific precision. >> these polls, i don't pay attention to them. >> polling is very good at saying how you're going to vote. it's very bad at saying who's going to vote. >> these two polls today are designed to convince everybody this election is over. >> we should note that fox news's own polls have been pretty much in line with everyone else's, but it's not just observers making the claim the polls are rigged. the romney campaign itself is now getting in on the act. >
